The New York Yankees are accelerating the development of their top prospect, George Lombard Jr., promoting him to Double-A earlier than anticipated and making him one of the youngest players at that level.
According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the 19-year-old shortstop earned the promotion after a dominant performance with High-A Hudson Valley, showcasing plate discipline and advanced hitting skills. Lombard, the Yankees’ top prospect and a 2023 first-round pick, is the son of former Major Leaguer George Lombard and has impressed scouts with his mature approach and decision-making at the plate. With a .329/.496/.488 slash line, one homer, and 11 steals over 24 games, Lombard’s early-season success followed a strong spring training that also drew praise from Yankees star Aaron Judge. Judge noted the young player’s composure and strong work ethic.
While Lombard’s rapid rise is turning heads—he’ll be the youngest player in the Eastern League—it’s unlikely he’ll debut in the majors this year. However, if his progress continues, he could reach the Yankees as early as 2026, a year ahead of earlier projections.
