BREAKING: Vikings QB Sam Darnold Inking Unexpected Contract With Seattle Seahawks

The Minnesota Vikings are carefully managing their approach with Sam Darnold, creating an opportunity for the Seattle Seahawks to step in.

Seattle recently traded Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders, a team rumored to be a potential landing spot for Darnold, influenced by NFL legend Tom Brady and a coaching staff featuring Pete Carroll and Chip Kelly. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk suggests Seattle must have a “clear plan” to replace Smith and views Darnold as the most logical candidate, especially after his strong performance against them in Week 16.

Florio later reinforced this idea, stating that “all signs point” to Darnold joining the Seahawks.Kevin O'Connell, Sam Darnold, Minnesota VikingsWith more options on the table, Darnold isn’t limited to the Vikings’ offer and may already have a destination in mind. Florio speculated that a deal between Seattle and Darnold’s agents could already be in place, despite potential tampering concerns. He also noted that Seattle traded Smith, who wanted $40 million annually, because they believe they can replace him for $30 million.

Darnold, 27, is coming off a career-best season in 2024, completing 66.2% of his passes for 4,319 yards and 35 touchdowns. However, his 12 interceptions and late-season struggles, including a disappointing playoff loss to the Rams, have left his future uncertain.

Now a free agent, Darnold is reportedly seeking a three-year contract. ESPN’s Adam Schefter linked him to Seattle following the trade, while The Athletic’s Dianna Russini noted that Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak has familiarity with Darnold. The key question is whether Seattle will offer the multi-year deal he desires, while the Vikings must decide whether to retain him or move forward with rookie J.J. McCarthy.
