Both the New York Mets and Yankees are in need of infielders. The Mets suffered a setback on Feb. 23 when newly acquired shortstop Nick Madrigal fractured his shoulder during a spring game against the Washington Nationals, landing him on the 60-day injured list. Meanwhile, the Yankees’ infield situation has deteriorated, first with second baseman Gleyber Torres departing in free agency and then with a series of spring training injuries, including third baseman D.J. LeMahieu, who is sidelined with a sore calf.Despite their needs, both teams passed on signing a proven free-agent middle infielder whose offensive production over the past five seasons has surpassed that of LeMahieu. However, neither the Yankees nor the Mets opted to bring in 35-year-old veteran Jose Iglesias. This is particularly surprising for the Mets, as Iglesias not only delivered an impressive .830 OPS in 85 games for them in 2024 but also became a fan favorite after his song OMG topped Billboard’s Latin chart and served as the unofficial anthem of the team’s remarkable run to the NLCS.
Rather than returning to New York, Iglesias has agreed to a minor league contract with the San Diego Padres, who have finished second to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West three of the past five seasons. According to MLB.com’s Jack Magruder, Iglesias will participate in the Padres’ spring training and, if promoted to the major league roster, will earn a $3 million salary, with performance incentives potentially adding another $1 million. Previously, Iglesias had expressed interest in rejoining the Mets, telling SNY, “It’s not over until I sign with someone else.” Now that he has signed, the Mets and Yankees remain on the hunt for infield help.
