Some athletes never fully reach their potential, but for Los Angeles Rams wide receiver, perseverance seemed to pay off. In his fifth NFL season and second with the Rams, Johnson finally broke through. He secured a roster spot, saw offensive snaps, and was even targeted in the passing game.
In the Rams’ offense, that was no small feat. With injuries plaguing the team in 2024, Johnson started two games. However, it was notable that he didn’t start in Week 18, when the Rams rested their starters. Still, he made the most of his opportunities, catching four of seven targets for 35 yards and a touchdown.
Despite his efforts, the Rams’ decision was clear. When his contract expired after the 2024 season, they chose not to bring him back.
Jets Sign Johnson
Ironically, the New York Jets were the only team on the Rams’ schedule that didn’t see Johnson play, as he was inactive in Week 16. But the Jets’ front office clearly saw something in him, signing him for the 2025 season.
At least on paper, Johnson appears to be the Jets’ WR2 in their revamped offense:
BREAKING: The New York Jets have signed underrated WR Tyler Johnson, formerly of the Rams & Bucs… believe it or not, he’d be the Jets WR2 right now behind Garrett Wilson.
After the Rams extended WR Tutu Atwell, Johnson’s departure became inevitable. He was the least-utilized receiver on the roster with prototypical size—6-foot-1, 205-210 pounds. If the Rams had planned to keep two receivers, Johnson likely would have been next in line. Instead, he now has a fresh opportunity with the Jets.
New York can be a tough market for new players, but after five seasons of limited opportunities, Johnson seems prepared for the challenge. While he has yet to prove himself as a 1,000-yard receiver, he has been productive when given a consistent workload. When targeted at least seven times in a game, he caught 13 of 21 passes for 171 yards and a touchdown—though those 21 passes were spread over three games.
With the Jets, Johnson should see more chances. And depending on who lines up under center, his name could become much more familiar in 2025.
