Russell Wilson is now officially a New York Giant, marking his departure from the Pittsburgh Steelers. Following his exit, Wilson took to social media to share a message with his new team.
“Been here before… can’t wait to do it again,” he posted, referencing MetLife Stadium, the Giants’ home field.
Wilson is expected to take over as the starting quarterback, continuing his career at 36 with hopes of playing for several more years. His contract includes $10.5 million in guaranteed money and could be worth up to $21 million. He is set to start over Jameis Winston, who the Giants recently signed.Wilson’s performance declined significantly toward the end of last season. Additionally, reports from January suggested that offensive coordinator Arthur Smith had limited Wilson’s ability to make adjustments at the line of scrimmage, which may have caused friction within the Steelers’ organization.
According to sources at the NFL Combine, the combination of Wilson’s late-season struggles and Smith’s reported restrictions created tension in Pittsburgh. Repairing those relationships would have been necessary for Wilson to return. However, with the Steelers seemingly comfortable with their quarterback situation, they are now moving forward without any of last season’s three quarterbacks on their roster.
