JUST IN: Newcastle are leading the race to sign premier league & England superstar.

Newcastle United are expected to adopt a balanced strategy in this summer’s transfer market, aiming to combine experienced Premier League players with more cost-effective international signings, according to The Athletic’s Chris Waugh.

In response to a fan inquiry about whether new sporting director Paul Mitchell’s appointment signals a move away from expensive domestic deals, Waugh clarified the club’s anticipated approach.

“While specific targets and budgets haven’t been finalized, a mixed strategy appears most likely,” Waugh explained. “This could include one or two established Premier League players, alongside signings from Europe and possibly other regions.”Nottingham Forest v Newcastle United - Premier League - City Ground

Newcastle’s improved financial standing under the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations provides more room to maneuver than last year, but not enough to focus solely on high-priced Premier League talent.

“They’re unlikely to be in a position to bring in several players from the Premier League,” Waugh noted, “due to the significantly higher costs compared to international options.”

Mitchell is also expected to continue the club’s trend of signing younger players with future resale value — a strategy aligned with Newcastle’s recruitment under the PIF ownership.

“He has a solid reputation for identifying young talent with long-term potential,” Waugh added.

A key aspect of this transfer window will be the collaboration between Mitchell and manager Eddie Howe.

“Howe will likely want a few players who can make an immediate impact in the starting XI, to complement those brought in as longer-term prospects — hence the need for a hybrid approach,” Waugh wrote.

As for priorities, Newcastle are currently aiming to bring in at least a right-sided center-back, a right-sided forward, a striker, and a goalkeeper, though Waugh believes more areas are likely to be addressed.
