LOCKED IN: Am Happy Coming Here, Ben Hammond Sends heartfelt message as he officially finds new home.

Last spring, Virginia Tech men’s basketball coach Mike Young was in need of a point guard for the upcoming 2024-25 campaign. With Sean Pedulla entering the transfer portal and committing to Ole Miss, that left just Brandon Rechsteiner and Temple transfer Hysier Miller as the primary ballhandlers for the season.

In May, Young received a commitment from Ben Hammond, an in-state Class of 2024 point guard, after Hammond de-committed from the University of Rhode Island. But before the season began, Miller was dismissed from the team, creating another vacancy at point guard. Hammond stepped up and made a strong impression in his freshman year.Virginia Tech Hokies v Duke Blue DevilsThough Rechsteiner started the season as the Hokies’ point guard, Hammond gradually took over the role around New Year’s. With every game, his performance improved. On Thursday, Hammond—who hails from Fairfax—announced his decision to remain at Virginia Tech for the 2025-26 season.

In an era where players often transfer at a moment’s notice, Hammond’s decision is a welcome development for Coach Young and his staff.

Hammond averaged 5.6 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 2.1 assists in 19.5 minutes per game this season. But his contributions extended beyond the stat sheet. Known for his court vision and ability to penetrate defenses to create opportunities for teammates, one of his standout moments came in January when he assisted Mylyjael Poteat on a crucial three-point play in the final seconds of a win over Miami.

His defense and outside shooting also improved steadily over the season. He posted a career-best 21 points along with seven rebounds, seven assists, and several key defensive plays in an overtime victory against Syracuse.

With Rechsteiner now in the transfer portal, Hammond’s return is critical for the Hokies, and it’s official—he’ll be back in Blacksburg for another season, with the potential to become a key player for Virginia Tech.
