The Cincinnati Reds are currently one of the most struggling teams in baseball. They seem unable to generate any offense unless it’s Elly De La Cruz and Matt McLain driving each other in. However, even these potential stars have cooled off after a strong start to the season.
There’s not much help coming from Triple-A, though Austin Hays and Tyler Stephenson are expected to return from the injured list soon. Given the situation, the Reds need to consider making a trade before their season takes a further downturn. One possible trade target could be Baltimore Orioles outfielder Heston Kjerstad. Kjerstad, 26, was a top prospect in the Orioles’ system before making it to the majors, but there’s still some competition for regular playing time. With that in mind, the Orioles might be open to trading him for a pitcher, and the Reds have more pitching depth than they know what to do with. A trade involving Andrew Abbott to the Orioles could be a starting point, possibly bringing back Kjerstad along with other players.
While the Orioles would likely need to offer more to land Abbott, it could be a trade that benefits both sides. Baltimore may not need Kjerstad long-term, but adding a healthy Abbott would strengthen their pitching and put them in a strong position for years to come. Meanwhile, the Reds need to find offensive reinforcements. With Rhett Lowder aiming to return to the rotation this season, Abbott may struggle to find consistent big league time. Additionally, prospects Chase Petty and Chase Burns could make their way to the majors this year.
