In a touching moment on Wednesday, Chicago Bulls guard  met with the family of Alex Reinhardt—the late donor whose knee cartilage may have saved Ball’s career two years ago.

Ball, who has struggled with persistent knee problems throughout his NBA career, underwent a meniscus and cartilage transplant on his left knee in March 2023 after multiple failed surgeries. His surgeon described the operation as a “Hail Mary.”

The cartilage used in the procedure came from Reinhardt, a 20-year-old from Dakota Dunes, South Dakota, who passed away in February 2023. Ball met Reinhardt’s family near the Bulls bench before the game, creating an emotional and memorable encounter.Lonzo Ball has been able to return to the court this season following a knee cartilage transplant“It’s been incredibly emotional,” said Alex’s mother, Angie. “But there’s also a lot of joy. Seeing how Alex’s donation is helping others—like Lonzo—brings us a sense of peace. We’ve heard from other recipients’ families, and now meeting Lonzo, it’s just a blessing to see people thriving thanks to Alex. We only wish he could be here.”

Ball has since returned to the court this season, crediting the transplant with helping him get back on his feet. Reinhardt’s family, who only recently learned that their son’s gift went to Ball, said they feel grateful to see the impact it’s had.
