The Houston Astros clinched the AL West title in a dramatic final weekend, while the Chicago Cubs and Seattle Mariners suffered collapses that knocked them out of playoff contention.
The Los Angeles Angels are navigating a rough patch, currently on a four-game skid after their first sweep of the season. In response, they’re bolstering their roster with depth moves and preparing for key players to return from injury.
Another Former Brave Lands in Anaheim
GM Perry Minasian has once again dipped into his former team’s talent pool, signing 35-year-old reliever Héctor Neris to a minor league deal. Neris, who most recently played for the Braves, continues a pattern of former Braves joining the Angels under Minasian’s watch — a group that already includes names like Ian Anderson, Jorge Soler, and even manager Ron Washington.
Neris, who won a World Series with the Astros in 2022, brings veteran experience to the Triple-A Salt Lake bullpen, which includes other seasoned arms like Dakota Hudson and Carl Edwards. Given the Angels’ inconsistent bullpen, there’s a strong chance Neris could get called up later this season.
Moncada Nearing Return
Third baseman Yoán Moncada is making progress in his recovery from a right thumb sprain. According to *The OC Register’s* Jeff Fletcher, Moncada has resumed hitting right-handed but isn’t yet ready to swing left-handed. He’s remained active defensively throughout his IL stint.
It’s unclear if the Angels will send Moncada on a rehab assignment before activating him. His return, along with Zach Neto’s activation, could prompt some roster decisions — possibly designating Nicky Lopez or J.D. Davis, who are out of options.
