The Sacramento Kings appear headed for yet another disappointing season, likely either missing the playoffs or exiting in the first round once again. If the playoffs began today, they’d need to get past the Dallas Mavericks, and then defeat either the Minnesota Timberwolves or Golden State Warriors just to earn a matchup with the Oklahoma City Thunder in the opening round.
With little optimism for this year and not much more promise ahead, the Kings are expected to break up their roster. Players like Malik Monk, Zach LaVine, and DeMar DeRozan could bring back some assets, but the most valuable trade piece is All-Star center Domantas Sabonis.
Averaging 18.9 points and 14 rebounds this season, Domantas Sabonis is on pace to lead the NBA in rebounding for a third straight year. At just 28 years old and under contract for three more seasons, he could command a significant return if the Sacramento Kings opt to move him.
Acquiring Sabonis would be a strong win-now move for any contender, as he would immediately address frontcourt needs.
Three teams stand out as potential landing spots: the Detroit Pistons, Los Angeles Lakers, and Orlando Magic.
The Pistons may soon face a decision on Jalen Duren, whose rookie contract ends after next season. If they’re uncertain about his long-term role, Sabonis would be a clear upgrade. Pairing him with Cade Cunningham, Ausar Thompson, Tim Hardaway Jr., and Ron Holland would give Detroit a dynamic lineup, and the team has the assets to make a competitive offer.
As usual, the Lakers are in the mix. After landing Luka Doncic, they’ve shown they can swing big deals. If they can hold onto their core of Doncic, LeBron James, and Austin Reaves while adding Sabonis, they’d be in prime position for another title run. LeBron could opt out and re-sign at a lower rate if it means adding a proven star. A package including Dalton Knecht and a first-rounder could get Sacramento’s attention.
Then there’s the Orlando Magic, who rank 27th in rebounding. They could cover for Sabonis’ defensive limitations and benefit greatly from his offensive presence. A starting five of Jalen Suggs, Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and Sabonis could help turn Orlando into a consistent playoff contender.
