Major Signing for Oklahoma: Five-Star Forward Set to Transform the Roster

Oklahoma men’s basketball coach Porter Moser and assistant general manager Trae Young are still working to bring more talent to Norman.

Multiple reports indicate that Alabama transfer forward Derrion Reid visited OU on Tuesday, hinting at a potentially major addition for the Sooners. Reid also confirmed his visit through a post on his Instagram.

Reid, a 6-foot-8 freshman forward, was a highly sought-after five-star prospect from Grovetown, Georgia, and a 2024 McDonald’s All-American. Ranked No. 11 overall in the 2024 class by both ESPN and On3, Reid brings significant pedigree.Gary Cosby Jr. / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn ImagesDuring his freshman year at Alabama, Reid initially cracked the starting lineup but spent most of the season coming off the bench for a team that advanced to the Elite Eight. He averaged six points, 2.8 rebounds, and 14.1 minutes per game in his debut college season.

According to Pete Nakos of On3, Reid entered the transfer portal on April 12 with a “Do Not Contact” tag, typically signaling a player already knows their next destination. However, nearly two weeks later, Reid has visited both Oklahoma and NC State, and there are also rumors he may return to his home state to play for Georgia.

So far this offseason, Oklahoma has added three solid players from the portal, starting with forward Tae Davis from Notre Dame. Davis was OU’s first transfer commitment, helping to address the Sooners’ major need for size and depth in the frontcourt.

At 6-foot-9, Davis was a key first step toward rebuilding the Sooners’ interior presence, but more reinforcements are needed to handle the physicality of the SEC. Reid, alongside incoming freshman Kai Rogers, could give OU the frontcourt depth needed to stay competitive and avoid another season plagued by long losing streaks.
