After sitting out four games due to a toe injury, Darius Garland rejoined the Cleveland Cavaliers on May 9. Though his stats were underwhelming, his return played a key role in reviving the team’s offense.
Speaking after the game, Garland addressed the backlash he’s faced for missing time—especially after previously calling out Tyler Herro for sitting. He emphasized that fans and critics don’t fully understand the physical challenges he’s dealing with.
“People don’t know what I’m going through,” Garland said. “Everyone has opinions. I’m just trying to play basketball and help us win. Everyone’s dealing with something at this stage.”
Garland logged nearly 25 minutes, scoring 10 points with 4 turnovers while shooting 3-for-11. Cleveland will need stronger performances from him to beat a resilient Indiana Pacers squad.
Still, getting Garland back is a positive sign. The big question now is whether he can play effectively through pain or if his injury will continue to limit him.
Coach Kenny Atkinson Praises Garland’s Grit
Head coach Kenny Atkinson highlighted Garland’s toughness, noting that even limited minutes from him make a difference.
“He’s pushing through a lot of pain,” Atkinson said. “It took a lot to get him out there, but he’s giving us what he can. Just having him as a ball handler and shot creator helps, even if he’s not at 100%.”
Garland’s presence also eases pressure on Donovan Mitchell, making it harder for defenders to focus solely on one player.
Mitchell Commends Garland’s Determination
Donovan Mitchell also expressed admiration for Garland’s effort, calling him a fighter and praising his impact despite not being fully healthy.
“I told him, even if he’s at 20 or 30%, we’ll take it,” Mitchell said. “His presence lifts us. I respect how hard he’s pushing through.”
Looking ahead, the spotlight will be on Garland’s durability—both in staying healthy and holding up defensively. If his struggles continue, the team may have to reassess his role.
