Justin Turner delivered a clutch two-run double in the bottom of the ninth inning, completing a three-run comeback that gave the Chicago Cubs a 5-4 walk-off win over the Miami Marlins Tuesday night at Wrigley Field.
Trailing 4-2 entering the ninth, the Cubs got a break when catcher Carson Kelly reached base on a misplay by Miami shortstop Xavier Edwards. After a walk and a fielder’s choice, Nico Hoerner drove in a run with a single to center, cutting the deficit to one. Turner then drove a pitch into the left-field corner, plating two and sealing the win.
Reliever Chris Flexen (1-0) earned the win, pitching two scoreless innings and allowing just one hit.
Pete Crow-Armstrong powered the Cubs early, hitting his team-leading 11th home run in the third and adding a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
Moises Ballesteros, recently called up from Triple-A Iowa and ranked as the Cubs’ No. 4 prospect by MLB Pipeline, went hitless in his MLB debut, including grounding into a double play with the bases loaded in the fourth.
Miami’s Connor Norby led off the fifth with a triple and homered to open the seventh, giving the Marlins a 3-2 lead. Derek Hill and Jesus Sanchez added hits, with Sanchez driving in a run. Kyle Stowers also homered, his eighth of the season, to open the scoring in the second.
Despite multi-hit games from Norby, Sanchez, and Edwards, the Marlins dropped their third straight and have now lost 13 of their last 16 games.
