Bruce Pearl had a strong reaction—one that included a four-letter word—on social media after landing Serbian forward Filip Jovic, another major addition for Auburn basketball. With Jovic in place, Pearl had already made a major move for the Tigers’ frontcourt. But on May 28, he locked in a critical piece for the backcourt as well.
Tahaad Pettiford, who tested the NBA waters this spring, chose to withdraw from the draft and return to Auburn for his sophomore season—right at the NCAA’s deadline to retain college eligibility. The only scholarship player returning from last year’s roster, Pettiford averaged 11.6 points per game as a freshman and served as the team’s sixth man. His return instantly elevates him to the starting point guard role, and Pearl is ready to give him more responsibility.
“If he came back, there’d be more on his plate,” Pearl said. “And I think he’s excited about that—he knows I’ll be asking more from him, and that gives him a chance to showcase more of what he can do.”
Pettiford’s decision came after he wrapped up a final pre-draft workout with the Atlanta Hawks Wednesday morning, where he impressed with a 42-inch max vertical—second-highest at the NBA Draft Combine. Despite measuring just over 6 feet barefoot, the explosive guard was projected as a second-round pick.
With another season in the SEC, Pettiford could raise his stock significantly—perhaps into lottery pick territory.
“He’s always been overlooked because of his size,” Pearl added. “There are only a handful of NBA teams even willing to consider a point guard under 6-foot-5.”
Auburn’s point guard rotation now features Pettiford and incoming freshman Kaden Magwood. The Tigers have also added guards Kevin Overton, Elyjah Freeman, Abdul Bashir, and freshman Simon Walker.
Elsewhere in the SEC, defending national champions Florida are building a strong case for a repeat. With big men Alex Condon and Thomas Haugh returning and key backcourt additions like Princeton’s Xaivian Lee and Arkansas transfer Boogie Fland, the Gators are early favorites once again. Fland, notably, was injured in last season’s matchup against Auburn.
Looking ahead, the anticipated rematch between Auburn and Florida could be a highlight of the college basketball season. With Pettiford anchoring the backcourt, Auburn remains a top contender in what promises to be a highly competitive year.
