While the Buffalo Bills have made several key additions to their defense this offseason, there’s still room for an undrafted free agent to earn a spot on the 2025 roster.
One NFL analyst believes that Wande Owens, an undrafted safety with exceptional athleticism, could be that player. Despite not being selected in the draft, Owens has been named a “rookie to watch” heading into the upcoming season.
The Bills used their first-round pick on Kentucky cornerback Maxwell Hairston, reinforcing their commitment to upgrading the secondary. But the additions didn’t stop there — Buffalo also brought in South Carolina defensive tackle T.J. Sanders, Arkansas edge rusher Landon Jackson, Kentucky DT Deone Walker, and Ohio State defensive back Jordan Hancock.
Still, Owens could stand out. Analyst Chris Trapasso praised Owens, noting his versatility and rare athletic profile. Owens played safety at both Yale and New Hampshire and boasts a solid 5-foot-11, 205-pound frame. He ran a 4.58-second 40-yard dash, posted a 43-inch vertical leap, and recorded an 11-foot-3 broad jump.
Trapasso emphasized Owens’ reliability in college, especially in run support, and highlighted his two interceptions and 15 pass breakups over four seasons. While Taron Johnson remains the Bills’ starting nickel corner, Owens could push for a key reserve role as a rookie if he maintains consistency and flashes the playmaking ability he showed in college.
Undrafted players face long odds of making an NFL roster, but special teams offer a realistic entry point. Owens will need to shine during OTAs and preseason action to prove his value.
The Bills’ secondary saw some reshuffling this offseason, with Rasul Douglas departing in free agency and Kaiir Elam being traded. Taylor Rapp and Damar Hamlin are expected to start at safety, but 2024 second-rounder Cole Bishop is expected to challenge them. Owens will also compete with Cam Lewis, Darrick Forrest, and Jordan Hancock for backup roles.
Buffalo’s secondary was exposed at times late last season, especially in the AFC Championship loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Owens will need to impress throughout the summer to stick with the team, but his raw athletic tools and college production make him a name worth watching heading into training camp.
