The Los Angeles Rams have reestablished themselves as one of the NFC’s elite teams following an impressive playoff showing last season. Although their run ended in the NFC Divisional Round against the Philadelphia Eagles, the Rams showcased their strength on both offense and defense.
Cornerback Derion Kendrick missed the entire season while recovering from a torn ACL. It was an unfortunate setback for the young defender, who had started 18 games across his first two seasons in L.A. Four days ago, the Rams released Kendrick — but in a rare move, they re-signed the 24-year-old on Tuesday to a new deal.
While details of the contract haven’t been revealed, the Rams’ decision to cut and then re-sign Kendrick may have strategic implications. Rather than offering an extension, the team likely chose to restructure his deal as he was approaching free agency. According to Camdon DaSilva, Kendrick’s release initially freed up \$3.5 million in cap space, which could be used for other signings.
Though Kendrick is expected to return under a more team-friendly contract, he still has a clear path to reclaiming a starting role as he works back from injury.
Over his career, Kendrick has totaled 92 tackles (77 solo), one interception, 14 pass deflections, and one safety in 32 games.
