In 2025, two players who could significantly shape the Las Vegas Raiders’ fortunes are All-Pro edge rusher Maxx Crosby and second-year offensive lineman Jackson Powers-Johnson.
As anchors at two of the most vital positions—defensive end and guard—Crosby and Powers-Johnson bring toughness, intelligence, and leadership that help elevate the performance of those around them.
But surprisingly, their close bond wasn’t always there. According to Crosby in a conversation with Tashan Reed of The Athletic, the pair didn’t exactly hit it off at first.
“Raiders DE Maxx Crosby acknowledged he and C Jackson Powers-Johnson didn’t have the best relationship last year,” Reed wrote. “But he said the second-year lineman has shown a lot of growth—he’s stronger, more detail-oriented, and ready to take the next step.”
When a fan pointed out how tight the two seem now, Reed clarified that the friendship took time to develop. Crosby is notoriously tough on younger players, which initially rubbed Powers-Johnson the wrong way.
“They weren’t close at the start,” Reed noted. “Crosby’s demanding approach with rookies caused some early friction. But over time, they gained mutual respect and have since grown close.”
Drafted 44th overall, Powers-Johnson entered the league with high expectations from both fans and the organization. While he may not have appreciated Crosby’s intensity at first, their growing friendship could be crucial to the Raiders’ success in the Pete Carroll era. Whether they help lift the team to contender status—or remain mired in mediocrity—may largely depend on how this duo continues to evolve.
