Calls Grow for Cardinals to Part Ways with Utility Player Before Season’s End
The St. Louis Cardinals took a gamble on utility player Garrett Hampson this season, picking him up off waivers in late June after stints with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Cincinnati Reds.
Hampson has contributed in a variety of roles for the Cardinals, appearing in all three outfield positions as well as second base, shortstop, and third base. He even pitched an inning in relief. Despite his defensive versatility, his offensive production has been underwhelming. In 33 games, he’s batting just .107/.138/.143, with no home runs and a single RBI.
Due to his lackluster performance, Stephen Parello of Red Bird Rants suggests the Cardinals should release Hampson before the season wraps up, noting, “There’s a reason why this is Hampson’s third team of the year. The smarter choice would be to move on and give someone else a shot.”
Clearing Space for Rising Talent
With the team’s postseason hopes fading fast, now may be the right time for St. Louis to give some of its top prospects a taste of major league action. Outfielders Josh Baez and Nathan Church—both projected to debut in 2026—could be strong candidates for call-ups. Catching prospect Leonardo Bernal, currently ranked third in the organization, could also get an early look before his expected 2026 debut.
