Breaking: “He’s back” Versatile player Returns to Cincinnati reds in New Role

CINCINNATI — With a bullpen game on the horizon, the Reds added a fresh arm to the roster by selecting the contract of left-handed reliever **Reiver Sanmartin** from Triple-A Louisville. To make room, fellow lefty **Sam Moll** was optioned.

Sanmartin, who last pitched in the majors on **May 7, 2023**, has been solid in Louisville this season. Over 41 appearances (including two starts), he holds a **6-2 record with a 2.79 ERA**, striking out 44 and walking 17 in 58 innings.

Manager **Terry Francona** said of the 29-year-old, “He’s got some length to him.”

Sanmartin previously appeared in 61 games for the Reds from 2021–23, posting a 5.77 ERA and undergoing **Tommy John surgery** in July 2023. He was removed from the 40-man roster during his recovery but worked his way back through consistent performances in Triple-A. In **August**, he excelled with a **1.20 ERA** over 15 innings.

Francona acknowledged Sanmartin’s journey, calling his comeback a “work in progress” and noting recent strong outings. “He’s been very good lately… sounds like he’s easy to root for.”

Meanwhile, Moll has struggled in 2025, posting a **6.38 ERA over 23 appearances**, a significant drop from his previous seasons.

Sanmartin’s promotion comes after **Nick Lodolo** was scratched from his start against Toronto due to illness. **Scott Barlow** was set to open the game, and **Joe La Sorsa** was designated for assignment.

Francona said of Lodolo, “He had a high temperature and chills… we sent him to the doctor.”

Ohtani Scratched from Start, Still Expected to Pitch This Weekend

Dodgers star **Shohei Ohtani** was removed from his scheduled pitching start Wednesday in Pittsburgh but remained in the lineup as the DH and leadoff hitter. **Emmet Sheehan** took the mound instead.

Manager ‘Dave Roberts’ explained that Ohtani wasn’t feeling well during his side session, though he’s healthy enough to bat. He’s expected to return to the mound this weekend in Baltimore.

Ohtani is coming off his best pitching outing of the season, earning his first win as a Dodger on **Aug. 27**, when he struck out nine Reds over five innings. He also smashed his **100th home run as a Dodger** on Tuesday night — a **120 mph shot**, the hardest-hit homer of his MLB career and one of the hardest of the Statcast Era.
