Breaking: Reds GM Terry Francona Emphatic and passionate statement on Stephenson.

Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson has returned from the 10-day injured list just in time for a critical three-game series against the Mets. Stephenson, who had been out since August 20 with a fractured left thumb, proved his readiness by catching 101-mph fastballs from top prospect Chase Burns in a simulated game earlier this week.

“That was the big test,” Stephenson said. “The thumb feels great. I’m ready to compete.”

Stephenson was officially reinstated on Friday. To make room, the Reds optioned catcher Will Banfield to Triple-A Louisville, and right-handed pitcher Joe La Sorsa was also sent outright to Louisville.

Reds manager Terry Francona confirmed that Stephenson won’t be used daily right away but is fully healthy. During his rehab stint in Triple-A, Stephenson hit a two-run homer and played seven innings behind the plate on Wednesday, then served as designated hitter on Thursday, going 1-for-2.

To protect his thumb while catching, he’ll wear a custom-fitted sleeve inside his glove. While he hasn’t had issues hitting, he’s still cautious about the lingering mental and physical effects of injury.

He also picked up a bruise on his left side after being hit by a pitch on Thursday, but it’s not considered serious.

In 72 games this season, Stephenson is batting .226 with nine home runs and 36 RBIs. His return comes at a crucial time, as the Reds are in the thick of the NL Wild Card race and chasing the Mets for the final spot.

“This is what we play for — big, meaningful games in September,” Stephenson said. “We’ve faced a lot of adversity this year, but this group is ready.”
