Breaking: More Nightmare Regarding Skubal, Troubling trend amid Growing inconsistencies and Title ..

The Detroit Tigers are on the verge of capturing their first AL Central crown in over a decade. With an 85–65 record and a 6.5-game lead over the Cleveland Guardians, Detroit sits comfortably atop the division as only 12 games remain in the regular season. They’re also within striking distance of the American League’s top seed, currently held by the Toronto Blue Jays (87–62).

Still, recent stumbles against weaker opponents—including series defeats to the Marlins, White Sox, and Mets—have cast doubt on their postseason readiness. A recent series win over the Yankees has offered a measure of reassurance, but consistency remains elusive.

Pitching Woes Beyond Skubal

One major concern lies in the starting rotation. Outside of ace Tarik Skubal, Detroit’s starters have been unreliable. Skubal, last year’s AL Cy Young winner and a leading candidate again, continues to shine as the lone dependable arm. However, the rest of the rotation has faltered.

Chris Paddack, a midseason acquisition, has been relegated to the bullpen. Veteran Charlie Morton has struggled with a 5.92 ERA since joining the team. Jack Flaherty has been inconsistent—capable of strong outings against contenders, but overall underwhelming. Meanwhile, All-Star Casey Mize has seen his performance slide in the second half, posting a 5.23 ERA.

Skubal Under the Spotlight

With the rotation in flux, Skubal has become the clear anchor of the Tigers’ playoff hopes. Manager A.J. Hinch is heavily relying on his ace, and that spotlight hasn’t gone unnoticed. Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly recently named Skubal as one of the players facing the most pressure heading into the postseason.

If the Tigers hope to lock up the division and make a serious October run, Skubal’s continued dominance will be critical. He’s carrying more than just the team’s playoff hopes—he’s shouldering the weight of a city hungry for baseball glory.
