After adding three transfer guards, the Virginia Cavaliers have secured a commitment from VCU redshirt freshman Martin Carrere. The 6-foot-8, 180-pound forward from France redshirted his first season under Ryan Odom in Richmond and is now the first VCU player to follow Odom to Charlottesville. Carrere joins Duke Miles (Oklahoma), Jacari White (North Dakota State), and Sam Lewis (Toledo) as transfer portal additions for the Wahoos.
Carrere is from Pontonx-sur-l’Adour, France, and represented the French U-18 team at the 2024 U-18 FIBA EuroBasket tournament. During the competition, he averaged 6.7 points per game and shot 41.9% from beyond the arc. He also played for Limoges CSP Elite U-21 in a French U-21 league, where he averaged 8.6 points per game and made 38.8% of his three-pointers.Carrere is expected to play as a stretch four under Odom and his staff, though he will likely need a year or two before seeing significant playing time. Odom tends to use a deep rotation, so Carrere might earn a few minutes during his redshirt freshman season. However, Virginia is still aiming to add three or four more frontcourt players to their roster before the portal period ends.
In related news, Elijah Saunders is reportedly still seriously considering Virginia, alongside four other schools—Texas Tech, Kansas State, Purdue, and Grand Canyon. Saunders could become the first Wahoo to return to UVA after entering the portal, joining Elijah Gertrude as the only returning scholarship players on the team.
