The San Francisco 49ers have started the 2025 season strong at 2-0, and much of the credit can be given to two key figures: defensive coordinator Robert Saleh and quarterback Mac Jones. However, both may not be with the team after this season.
Saleh returned to San Francisco’s staff after stints with the New York Jets and briefly with the Green Bay Packers. Under his leadership, the defense has performed well in the early part of the season and has stepped up in crucial moments.
Quarterback Brock Purdy started in Week 1 against Seattle and, despite a rough outing, secured the win. But after suffering a toe injury, Mac Jones stepped in for Week 2 against the Saints and delivered an impressive performance — 279 passing yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. His command of Kyle Shanahan’s offense even sparked some (mostly unfounded) speculation about a quarterback controversy.
Regardless of that, it’s reasonable to wonder whether both Saleh and Jones could be on their way out in 2026.
Saleh and Jones Could Be Gone After This Season
Jones is on a two-year deal with the 49ers, initially brought in to provide stability behind Purdy — something the team has lacked recently. But if he continues to play well while Purdy recovers, other teams may come calling. Should a compelling trade offer arise during the season or offseason, San Francisco could be tempted to move him.
As for Saleh, a return to head coaching might be on the horizon. Although his time with the Jets didn’t go well, many attribute that to bad circumstances rather than poor coaching. If the 49ers’ defense continues to perform — especially considering its youthful roster — Saleh may attract interest from teams looking for a fresh start at head coach.
San Francisco would prefer to keep him, particularly since they’ve dealt with frequent turnover at defensive coordinator. Head coach Kyle Shanahan likely wants to avoid another change at that spot.
Still, after what he went through in New York, Saleh might be cautious and wait for the right coaching opportunity — one that sets him up for success the second time around.
As the season unfolds, don’t be surprised if the 49ers are searching for both a new defensive coordinator and a new backup quarterback in the offseason.
