The Oklahoma Sooners and head coach Brent Venables are going after their future quarterback with the urgency of scheduling an early-season nonconference matchup.
Graham Simpson, a freshman quarterback still early in his high school career, shared via X (formerly Twitter) that he’s already received a scholarship offer from Oklahoma — one of the first steps in the 2028 recruiting cycle.
Oklahoma Jumps Ahead in the Race for a Rising Star
While offering a player with just one year of high school experience may seem premature, the Sooners are clearly betting that Simpson will become one of the most sought-after quarterbacks in the country. They’re not alone, either — the young phenom has also announced offers from programs like Memphis, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Syracuse, Boston College, Duke, Arkansas, UCLA, Arizona, and North Carolina.Simpson’s early hype is backed by an incredible freshman season. He completed 75.8% of his passes for 4,135 yards and 57 touchdowns, throwing just one interception — and that didn’t come until the state semifinals. He led Westview High School to a Tennessee state championship and earned MaxPreps National Freshman of the Year honors.
A Football Pedigree and Historic Debut
Simpson has football in his blood — his older brother, Ty Simpson, is currently a quarterback at Alabama. In Graham’s high school debut, he threw for seven touchdowns, breaking Ty’s school record of five.
Long Road Ahead in the 2028 Cycle
Oklahoma is still focused on wrapping up its 2026 recruiting class and hasn’t landed any 2028 commitments yet. With several years to go before any decisions are finalized, Simpson’s list of suitors will likely continue to grow.
Even if he chooses Oklahoma, Simpson wouldn’t arrive on campus until 2028 — and it’s uncertain whether Venables will still be at the helm when that time comes.
