The Red Sox made three roster cuts during spring training on Monday, reassigning non-roster invitees to minor league camp.
With these moves, 52 players, including 15 non-roster invitees, remain in big league camp. A more substantial round of cuts is expected Wednesday morning after Boston faces the Yankees in Tampa Bay on Tuesday.
Manager Alex Cora anticipates finalizing position player decisions by the end of the week.
“By Friday, we should have a better idea,” Cora said Monday at JetBlue Park.
The battle for the final two rotation spots—featuring Richard Fitts, Quinn Priester, Sean Newcomb, Cooper Criswell, and Michael Fulmer—will likely be determined when the Red Sox wrap up spring training in Mexico next Monday and Tuesday.Fitts has impressed, allowing just one run over 10 ⅔ innings this spring, while Newcomb has also had a strong showing, giving up only one run in 9 ⅔ innings. However, Newcomb, who is on a minor league contract, does not have an opt-out before the season starts. Both he and Fulmer are non-roster invitees.
Criswell, who was recently ill, has the rare advantage of a fourth minor league option, meaning he could start the season in Triple-A Worcester’s rotation.
Cora has also stated that top prospects Roman Anthony, Kristian Campbell, and Marcelo Mayer will only make the Opening Day roster if they secure everyday starting roles, as Boston wants them playing regularly at whichever level they begin the season.
Adams, 33, struggled in Grapefruit League action, surrendering six runs (five earned) in 4 ⅔ innings while issuing seven walks. The right-hander, who has pitched in 188 major league games, posted a 3.92 ERA in 56 appearances for the Oakland Athletics in 2024.
Campbell, 27, made Boston’s Opening Day roster in 2024 but spent much of the season injured or in Triple-A Worcester. After being designated for assignment on Nov. 19 and subsequently non-tendered, he re-signed with Boston on a minor league deal three days later. He arrived at camp in improved shape, having shed 25-30 pounds, but struggled in Grapefruit League play, allowing six runs, 10 hits, and five walks while striking out three in 5 ⅓ innings.
Davis, also 27, gave up five runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out nine over 9 ⅓ innings in spring training.
