After starting their season in Tokyo, the Chicago Cubs have played more games than any other team so far. On Tuesday, Justin Steele made his third start of the year, and Shota Imanaga will do the same on Friday. Managing pitcher workloads and limiting innings is already a key concern for Cubs manager Craig Counsell. With that in mind, Chicago will likely explore the starting pitching market as the trade deadline approaches. One potential trade target is Seattle Mariners ace Luis Castillo. The Cubs were linked to the Mariners and Castillo multiple times during the offseason, and a midseason trade for the three-time All-Star makes a lot of sense. Castillo has been one of the most consistent pitchers in baseball, posting a career ERA of 3.55, with only one season above 4.00 (2018). If Seattle is open to trade discussions, Cubs GM Jed Hoyer should strongly consider making an offer.
A potential trade package could include:
Cubs receive: Luis Castillo
Mariners receive: LHP Matthew Boyd, RHP Brandon Birdsell (CHC No. 8 prospect), RHP Jack Neely (CHC No. 16 prospect), and 3B Gage Workman (CHC No. 29 prospect).
For Seattle, this deal would clear Castillo’s remaining $72 million contract while taking on Boyd’s more manageable $29 million. Additionally, the Mariners would gain two promising young pitchers and Workman, who impressed during Spring Training. If the Cubs land Castillo, they would likely solidify themselves as the favorites in the NL Central.
