LSU, one of just two SEC teams that missed out on the NCAA Tournament this season, has already begun building for next year with the addition of Portland transfer Max Mackinnon.
Mackinnon’s agent, Daniel Moldovan, confirmed the transfer to ESPN on Thursday night.
Originally from Australia, the 6-foot-6 wing heads to Baton Rouge after a strong season at Portland, where he averaged 14.5 points per game and shot 41% from three-point range in the West Coast Conference. His connection to LSU may be strengthened by associate head coach David Patrick, who also hails from Australia.
Mackinnon entered the transfer portal and chose LSU over several other programs that were actively recruiting him this offseason. Originally from Australia, he’s had a winding collegiate journey, beginning with two seasons at Elon before spending the 2024-25 season at Portland.
During his time with the Pilots, Mackinnon posted solid numbers—averaging 4.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game, while shooting 46.7% from the field and 88.7% from the free-throw line—demonstrating his ability to contribute offensively. His scoring and versatility will be a welcome addition for LSU, which struggled last season with a 14-18 overall record and just 3-15 in SEC play.
With Mackinnon’s commitment, LSU now has four transfers joining the program this offseason.
