Free-agent quarterback has moved one step closer to potentially joining the New York Giants. According to NJ Advance Media, He expressed his strong interest in signing with the team, stating he would “absolutely” do so if given the opportunity to “keep playing and do what I do best.”
Most recently with the Cleveland Browns, Winston is set to meet with the Giants on Tuesday, as reported by Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network. The Giants, seemingly growing impatient with Aaron Rodgers’ indecision about joining them as a bridge quarterback, have already met with Russell Wilson and Joe Flacco for the role.
Unlike the other bridge quarterback candidates linked to the Giants this offseason, Winston has never played in a Super Bowl. However, the 2013 Heisman Trophy winner has notable achievements, including a Pro Bowl selection in 2015 and leading the NFL in passing yards in 2019.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Winston as the first overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. He spent five seasons with the Bucs, followed by four years with the New Orleans Saints, and played for the Browns last season. Winston became Cleveland’s starting quarterback in Week 7 after DeShaun Watson suffered an Achilles injury.A 10-year NFL veteran, Winston has played in 105 regular-season games, making 87 starts. He holds a career completion percentage of 61.2% (1,944 of 3,178), amassing 24,225 passing yards, 154 touchdowns, and 111 interceptions. Known for his strong arm and willingness to take deep shots, Winston has a 46.9% success rate in gaining the minimum required yardage on each down and an 86.4 career quarterback rating.
Winston also brings mobility to the position, with 323 career rushing attempts for 1,297 yards, 111 first downs, and 12 touchdowns.
The Browns reportedly have little interest in re-signing Winston, having met with Wilson last Thursday—one day before Wilson’s visit with the Giants.
Meanwhile, Rodgers is reportedly waiting to see if the Minnesota Vikings make him an offer, though he has remained tight-lipped about his potential landing spot.
