Tennessee’s basketball program is thriving in the transfer portal, as head coach Rick Barnes and his staff have filled key roster gaps while creating space for more additions following a wave of player departures.
The Vols have already landed transfers like Jaylen Carey and Ja’Kobi Gillespie, and there’s increasing optimism that they could secure one of the top five-star recruits available. Nate Ament is expected to announce his decision soon, and Tennessee is making a strong push to land him.Gillespie mentioned, “I’ve already started recruiting Nate Ament and my guy Rodney Rice.”
Ament, ranked as a top-five player in the 2025 class, is currently leaning slightly toward Duke. However, his decision could shift if certain players return to the Blue Devils.
Analyst Jeff Goodman remarked, “I’d be a little surprised if Nate Ament doesn’t choose Duke,” though Tennessee is gaining momentum.
Travis Branham added, “Duke still has the edge for now, but Tennessee is definitely making up ground.”
Ament has drawn comparisons to Kevin Durant, who was coached by Barnes during his college days. That connection could influence Ament’s choice.
“Coach Barnes is known for working with high-character guys. Seeing how he helped KD grow into who he is today is really appealing,” Ament shared.
Barnes’ ability to evolve with the modern recruiting landscape and prioritize player development may be just what it takes to bring Ament to Knoxville for his anticipated one-and-done college season.
