The Philadelphia Phillies have signed veteran pitcher in hopes of boosting their rotation for a strong postseason run.
The 31-year-old right-hander, who won World Series titles with the Dodgers in 2020 and 2024 and has been named an NL All-Star twice, was released by the Boston Red Sox on Friday. In 23 appearances this season (22 starts), Buehler posted a 7–7 record with a 5.45 ERA.
With ace Zack Wheeler sidelined due to thoracic outlet syndrome, the Phillies had a vacancy in their rotation. Buehler will be eligible for the playoffs and has been sent to **Triple-A Lehigh Valley**, where he’s scheduled to pitch Saturday before rejoining the major league team for a start on **Sept. 12** against the Kansas City Royals.
“We’re excited about bringing him in because we think he improves our team,” said **Phillies president Dave Dombrowski**. “Our goal is to make the playoffs and then do whatever we can to win.”
Buehler had signed a **one-year, \$21.05 million contract** with Boston last offseason but struggled after an early shoulder injury. He was eventually removed from the rotation in August and was released to make space for top prospect **Payton Tolle**.
Despite a tough season, Buehler impressed Phillies management with a strong outing in Philadelphia on **July 21**, when he gave up just one earned run over seven innings. That performance stuck with Dombrowski and his team.
“He still has a quality arm,” Dombrowski noted. “We’ve seen some things we think we can work on with him.”
The Phillies front office, including manager **Rob Thomson** and pitching coach **Caleb Cotham**, had a productive Zoom meeting with Buehler and his agents to finalize the plan.
“He’s on board with it, and so are we,” Dombrowski said.
