The New York Yankees revamped their infield this offseason, allowing Gleyber Torres to leave and shifting Jazz Chisholm Jr. to second base. They also brought in Paul Goldschmidt to handle first base duties. However, the combination of DJ LeMahieu and Oswaldo Cabrera at third base poses concerns, especially with LeMahieu nursing an injury and Cabrera more effective in a utility role.Chisholm’s flexibility could enable the Yankees to pursue upgrades at both second and third base as the trade deadline nears. According to Dylan Sanders of Sports Illustrated, Jeff McNeil is a possible trade target. “Though McNeil just returned from an oblique injury, he retains value as a steady performer in the middle infield,” Sanders noted, citing his .257/.332/.380 slash line over the past three seasons and solid defensive skills.
Acquiring McNeil, a two-time All-Star and 2022 NL batting champion, would allow the Yankees to shift Chisholm to third. McNeil, under contract through 2027 with a four-year, $50 million deal signed in 2023, has made 26 career starts at third base but is primarily a second baseman. He’s off to a strong start this season, hitting 4-for-12 with three RBIs and a homer in his first three games, and could provide the Yankees with a key infield upgrade.
