The Los Angeles Dodgers aimed to strengthen their bullpen during the offseason to avoid making moves at the trade deadline. However, due to injuries and inconsistent performances, they now find themselves in need of relief help. With the deadline just two weeks away, the Dodgers are likely to pay a premium for a reliever. CBS Sports’ Mike Axisa believes Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley is their top target.“Tanner Scott has had an up-and-down year, and like most contenders, the Dodgers are expected to pursue bullpen reinforcements,” Axisa noted. He also pointed out that Helsley, who has a 3.27 ERA and 19 saves through 33 appearances, will be a free agent after the season. Losing him for only a compensatory draft pick—if the Cardinals even make a qualifying offer—would be a tough outcome for St. Louis.
While Axisa didn’t specify what the Dodgers might offer, Bobby Miller stands out as a trade candidate. The 25-year-old had a strong rookie season but has struggled to replicate that success. St. Louis might also push for infielder Alex Freeland, the Dodgers’ No. 5 prospect, especially with Nolan Arenado’s future uncertain. If Helsley can help stabilize the bullpen, Axisa argues, the Dodgers shouldn’t hesitate to pay the price.
