The Boston Red Sox made headlines by signing infielder Veteran to a $120 million contract. However, their current star third baseman, may not be thrilled about the possibility of shifting positions. Could this signal the end of his time in Boston? If so, could the New York Mets emerge as a trade suitor?
The Player has been a key offensive contributor for the Red Sox throughout his career. Since 2021, he’s earned two Silver Slugger Awards, made three All-Star appearances, and finished in the top 20 of AL MVP voting four times. Over that span, he has maintained an .873 OPS while averaging 32 home runs, 37 doubles, 96 RBIs, and 91 runs per season.
While a trade seems unlikely, speculation is bound to arise. Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer proposed a potential deal that would send Devers to the Mets in exchange for outfielder Starling Marte, right-handed pitcher Brandon Sproat, and outfielder Drew Gilbert.
“It would be an imperfect fit, as Devers at third would force Mark Vientos, Pete Alonso, and Jesse Winker to share time at first base and DH,” Rymer noted. “Still, one of those players—likely Winker—would be better suited for a bench role. Additionally, even with a $331 million payroll, the Mets currently sit behind the Dodgers, Braves, and Phillies in the NL hierarchy. Adding Devers could change that dynamic and set the Mets up well beyond 2025, alongside Vientos, Juan Soto, and Francisco Lindor.”
Devers is currently in the middle of a 10-year, $313.5 million contract that runs through 2033.
