Senior forward Tyreek Smith will not suit up for the Memphis Tigers this season, with their opener set for 8:00 p.m. on Monday.
Just hours ahead of the NCAA men’s basketball season tipping off, Smith has reportedly entered the transfer portal. The redshirt senior is now seeking to join his fifth college program, despite never having played a regular season game for Memphis.
There was some criticism on social media regarding alleged “broken promises” between the university and Smith as they addressed NIL-related matters. This decision was reportedly made on Saturday, just two days before the season started.
Smith did participate in one of Memphis’ exhibition games before the season but later asked for personal time away from the team.
He also missed part of the preseason due to an ankle injury and was seen wearing a brace on his right foot.
According to the *Commercial Appeal*, the senior is still eligible to transfer and play for another program once the fall semester concludes in December. However, securing a spot at a fifth school may be a challenge at this stage.
