The New York Giants, led by general manager Joe Schoen, have shown a consistent willingness to give their rookies significant playing time. This approach is both a reflection of the team’s developmental philosophy and a necessity due to the overall lack of elite talent on the roster. That trend doesn’t appear to be changing heading into the 2025 season.
With their fourth-round pick, the Giants selected running back Cam Skattebo, rounding out their backfield rotation. He’s expected to pair well with second-year player Tyrone Tracy Jr., and much like last year’s rookie group, Skattebo is likely to see meaningful snaps from the start.
While Tracy is expected to remain the starter after an impressive rookie campaign, Skattebo’s arrival could spell trouble for veteran Devin Singletary. Despite signing a $16.5 million deal after a standout season, Singletary struggled behind a faltering offensive line in 2024. His lack of elite physical traits makes him less of a big-play threat, especially compared to Tracy, who proved hard to bench with his explosive performances.
According to Bleacher Report, Skattebo was named among Day 3 rookies capable of having an immediate impact. Analyst Damian Parson described him as a “multifaceted playmaker” with soft hands and a bruising running style that reflects the gritty identity of New York.
Skattebo brings a physical edge that could earn him early touches in short-yardage and late-game situations, areas where the Giants need a tough, downhill runner. While Singletary’s experience and vision offer steady value, he now looks more like a backup option behind the rookie.
Parson adds that Skattebo’s style complements Tracy’s agility and cutting ability, forming a balanced tandem in the backfield. He’s poised to contribute right away, especially when it comes to controlling the pace of the game late or setting the tone early on.
Barring injuries or a disappointing debut season, Skattebo’s emergence likely limits Singletary’s role significantly in what could be his final year with the Giants.
