With the Minnesota Vikings deciding not to pursue Aaron Rodgers, it looks like quarterback J.J. McCarthy is set to lead the team into the 2025 season.
McCarthy, last year’s 10th overall draft pick, missed his rookie regular season due to a torn meniscus. On Tuesday, during an interview with Kay Adams on the *Up & Adams Show* before the NFLPA Classic Golf event in Mexico, the 22-year-old quarterback said he’s fully recovered.
“I’m 100%,” McCarthy stated confidently.
He made a strong impression in his first preseason outing, going 11-of-17 for 188 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Unfortunately, the next day he was sidelined with what turned out to be a torn meniscus. A second surgery in November addressed swelling, but the team insisted it wouldn’t delay his return.
Reflecting on the injury, McCarthy called it a “blessing in disguise,” saying the time off gave him a chance to reflect and build a consistent routine — something he sees as vital for young players in the NFL.
This offseason, speculation swirled around whether the Vikings would commit to McCarthy as their starter. Sam Darnold had a standout season but has since moved to Seattle, and the team reportedly passed on signing Rodgers, indicating trust in their young QB.
Despite that, McCarthy says no one from the team has officially named him the starter — and he’s fine with that.
“They haven’t told me I’m the guy, and I’m glad,” he said. “I want to earn it every day. Nothing should just be handed to you.”
Minnesota has been active in free agency, adding protection on the offensive line and strengthening the defense. While they’re still expected to bring in a veteran backup, most signs point to McCarthy leading the offense this fall.
“I’m just staying locked into rehab and not straying from the process,” he said, focused on being ready when the time comes.
