The Miami Hurricanes basketball program has bolstered its coaching staff with the addition of Russell Springmann, the former head coach at Oral Roberts University. Springmann joins new head coach Jai Lucas, bringing more than 30 years of coaching experience to the team. The news was first reported by CanesInSight.
“I’ve had the privilege of both playing for and coaching alongside Russell during our time at Texas,” Lucas said. “He’s an outstanding coach and an even better human being. His deep knowledge of the game and over two decades of experience will be crucial in shaping the culture we’re building at The U.”Springmann began his coaching career shortly after playing at Salisbury State University, where he spent two years as an assistant coach. He then led Mardela High School in Maryland, earning two conference Coach of the Year awards over four seasons. His college coaching journey began at the University of Florida, followed by a 14-year tenure at the University of Texas under Rick Barnes, where he helped guide the Longhorns to 13 NCAA Tournament appearances and five Sweet 16 finishes.
He later served as an assistant at the University of San Diego from 2015 to 2017 and worked as a scout for the Oklahoma City Thunder before joining Oral Roberts in 2018. Promoted to head coach in 2023, Springmann was part of Oral Roberts’ notable Sweet Sixteen run in 2023 as a No. 15 seed.
Lucas’ decision to bring in Springmann reflects his commitment to assembling a seasoned and well-rounded staff. As the Hurricanes aim to bounce back from a tough 2024–25 season, the new coaching team is focused on returning the program to competitiveness within the ACC.
