The New Orleans Saints suddenly find themselves urgently in need of a starting quarterback. Could they reach out to the 49ers to trade for Brock Purdy?
Derek Carr, their current starter, has sustained a shoulder injury that may sideline him for the entire 2025 season, according to reports. The remaining quarterbacks on the roster—Spencer Rattler, Jacob Haener, and Ben DiNucci—leave little hope for success, meaning the Saints could be headed for another disappointing season unless they make a bold move for a new QB.
Last season, the Saints were solid with Carr, posting a 5-5 record. Without him, they were a dismal 0-7. While Carr is decent, he’s far from elite, so the Saints might have a shot at the playoffs if they find a better option. After all, they play in one of the weakest divisions in football.
The Saints should consider offering the 49ers the ninth overall pick in this year’s draft for Purdy. They should also make him a lucrative offer, potentially more than $50 million per season, to secure him as their future quarterback following Drew Brees.
Purdy would be a strong fit for the Saints, given their dome stadium, which would protect him from the weather conditions he struggles with, like rain and wind.
For the 49ers, they’d be left with two first-round picks—No. 9 and No. 11—giving them options to either draft a quarterback (perhaps Shedeur Sanders?) or look at other plans like starting Mac Jones and drafting a backup later on.
Since the 49ers are in the early stages of a rebuild, paying Purdy upwards of $50 million annually doesn’t seem like the best move right now.
Saints, it’s time to make the call.
