Atlanta Braves rookie pitcher has suffered a torn UCL in his throwing elbow, sidelining him for the rest of the 2025 season and likely delaying his return until sometime in 2026.
The 22-year-old right-hander exited Thursday’s 5-4 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies—the first game of a doubleheader—after telling manager Brian Snitker he felt a “pop” during a third-inning pitch. Originally placed on the 15-day injured list, Smith-Shawver was transferred to the 60-day IL the following day.
Braves manager Brian Snitker confirmed Friday that imaging revealed a ligament tear and said the next steps would be determined after Smith-Shawver consults with doctors. It remains unclear whether he will require Tommy John surgery.Earlier in the game, Smith-Shawver gave up a two-run homer to Rafael Marchán and was struck on the ankle by a line drive from Bryson Stott. He stayed in the game briefly after throwing a warmup pitch but exited following a flyout by Trea Turner that caused him to wince.
Through nine starts this season, Smith-Shawver posted a 3-2 record with a 3.86 ERA, striking out 42 and issuing 21 walks over 44 1/3 innings.
“It’s always tough when this happens to a young pitcher,” Snitker said. “He was pitching well and feeling confident.”
