The Chicago Cubs didn’t play any games over the offseason, but they made a major move in December by acquiring Kyle Tucker from the Houston Astros in a high-profile trade. In return, the Cubs sent third baseman Isaac Paredes, pitching prospect Hayden Wesneski, and minor leaguer Cam Smith to Houston to bring in Tucker, a proven All-Star.Since the trade, the Cubs have been eager to keep Tucker long-term, especially given the significant assets they gave up. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Tucker could command a contract worth up to $500 million, meaning retaining him won’t be cheap.
Recently, ESPN radio host David Kaplan shared insight into the Cubs’ stance on the matter.
“From what I’m hearing, the Cubs have accepted that they’ll have to pay whatever it takes to keep Tucker. That doesn’t mean he’ll agree to it, but they’re prepared to spend big,” Kaplan said on the Cubs Rekap podcast.
Tucker has made an immediate impact in Chicago. Through April 29, he’s hitting .289 with seven home runs, 25 RBIs, and 25 runs scored. The Cubs are off to a solid 17-12 start and look like contenders in the NL Central, making Tucker’s future with the team a key focus.
Some reports suggest that Tucker might agree to an extension before reaching free agency, though MLB insider Jon Heyman notes such deals are uncommon.
“As of now, there’s no indication talks have begun. But negotiations with Tucker are expected,” Heyman reported. “Landing a deal in a contract year for a player of his caliber is rare, especially when he’s new to the team.”
While the situation is still developing, the latest reports show optimism about the Cubs’ chances of keeping Tucker.
