The Denver Broncos surprised many by selecting RJ Harvey in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft, despite already having solid production in the run game. Former Broncos star Chris Harris believes the team’s offensive struggles weren’t just about personnel but also stem from quarterback Bo Nix and head coach Sean Payton drifting from successful strategies.
The Broncos finished 16th in rushing yards last season, with Nix contributing 430 of those yards—third most on the team. Speaking on the “DNVR Broncos Podcast” with ex-teammate Bennie Fowler, Harris said Nix needs to take more control of the offense.
“Next season, I want to see Bo assert himself more—take on a bigger leadership role between plays,” Harris explained. He noted Payton’s history with two-play calls and pre-snap checks, referencing how Drew Brees and Peyton Manning used advanced control at the line of scrimmage. “Can Bo evolve into that kind of quarterback? Will they take the training wheels off and let him grow?”
Harris also wants to see more designed runs for Nix. “We moved away from that late in the season. Look at teams like Philly, Buffalo, and Baltimore—they’re still using their quarterbacks in the run game,” Harris said.
He emphasized that if Nix stays healthy, integrating more QB runs and allowing him to fully command the offense could help him develop further. “I’m sure he knows the whole playbook by now,” Harris added. “But he needs to keep progressing—run more, lead more, and expand his control over the offense.”
Nix, who drew pre-draft comparisons to Drew Brees, has reportedly also been in contact with Peyton Manning since arriving in Denver.
