The 2024 season fell short of expectations for the Miami Dolphins. From the injury concerns surrounding Tua Tagovailoa to the looming uncertainty over Tyreek Hill and Jalen Ramsey’s futures with the team, the year didn’t unfold the way fans or players had hoped.
Jordan Poyer, who joined the Dolphins after a long tenure with the Buffalo Bills from 2017 to 2023, played his 12th NFL season in Miami. After his brief stint, he made a candid appearance on Good Morning Football, where he shared his perspective on the season.“Last year was incredibly difficult on many fronts. The team struggled, and I didn’t perform the way I wanted to. The transition from Buffalo to Miami — with different cultures and systems — just didn’t go the way anyone expected,” Poyer said.
His remark that “our team wasn’t very good” raised eyebrows, especially given his departure. Most players typically avoid openly criticizing their former teams, even in challenging seasons.
Poyer’s admission that he underperformed was backed up by data. According to Pro Football Focus, his defensive rating in 2024 was his lowest since 2016, back when he played for the Cleveland Browns. Pro Football Reference noted that he allowed 490 yards in coverage — the most he’s given up in a season since 2018 — and posted a 111.2 passer rating when targeted, the second-worst of his career since that year.
Compared to his time with the Bills, Poyer’s stint in Miami was far from his All-Pro level. At 33 years old, he had one of the toughest seasons of his career.
Given the difficulties Miami faced in 2024, it’s understandable that the team underachieved. Still, for a player who spent just one year with the franchise to publicly call the team “not very good” is unusual — and understandably frustrating for Dolphins fans and players alike.
