With Daniel Jones officially out, the New York Giants are preparing to usher in a new quarterback era. However, they’re not necessarily rushing to select one in the upcoming NFL Draft. While top prospects like Colorado’s Travis Hunter and Penn State’s Abdul Carter are in play, Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders is also under serious consideration—widely viewed as the second-best QB in the class behind Cam Ward.
The Giants have taken a close look at Sanders, attending several of his games and practices and meeting with him multiple times during the pre-draft process. Their scouting trip to Boulder likely included interactions with Colorado offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur—who previously served as the Giants’ head coach with mixed results.
Shurmur made headlines with a surprising comparison, telling the *New York Post* that Sanders reminds him of Daniel Jones, both as a player and a person. “They’re both great people and accomplished college QBs with NFL potential,” said Shurmur.
In 2024, under Shurmur’s guidance, Sanders had his best collegiate season—throwing for 4,134 yards and 37 touchdowns, leading the Big 12 in several passing categories. Shurmur also coached Jones in his rookie season, which ended with a 4-12 record and a 24-touchdown, 12-interception stat line.
While Sanders and Jones share traits like accuracy and a structured playing style, Sanders is seen as having more creativity and experience under pressure—qualities that could give him an edge.
Shurmur praised Sanders’ leadership, accuracy, and clutch performances, calling him a “heroic” figure on the field. Though New York hasn’t made a final decision, and Hunter and Carter remain top-three contenders, Shurmur believes any team that drafts Sanders will be thrilled with the pick.
