The Mets have acquired right-handed pitcher from the Giants in exchange for cash considerations, as reported by Mike Puma of the New York Post. He was on a minor league contract with San Francisco, so the Mets don’t need to make a 40-man roster move unless they decide to call him up.
The Star, 31, has seen major league action in parts of two seasons. Drafted in the eighth round by Cleveland in 2015, he debuted with them in 2021, throwing 28 2/3 innings with a 4.71 ERA over 21 games. While his strikeout rate was a solid 22.7%, he struggled with control (14.1% walk rate) and gave up too many home runs. He performed much better at Triple-A that year, logging a 1.57 ERA in 22 2/3 innings, but took a step back in 2022 and didn’t reach the majors. In 2023, he split time between the Angels and Red Sox organizations, eventually pitching 17 big league games for Boston. However, he had a rough outing there, posting a 7.36 ERA, with both a declining strikeout rate (18.7%) and a still-high walk rate (13.7%). His Triple-A results were also underwhelming. Although he pitched well in the Giants’ Triple-A system last year, he’s struggled so far in 2025, posting a 6.11 ERA and 5.50 FIP in 17 2/3 innings.
Now with the Mets, Garza is hoping a fresh start—and moving out of the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League—can help him rebound. His control has improved recently, with a 26.0% strikeout rate and 7.8% walk rate this season. If he can maintain those improvements, he could become a bullpen option for the Mets despite his tendency to allow hard contact. While the Mets’ bullpen has been strong this year, injuries have exposed its depth at times, making Garza a potentially useful depth piece alongside others like Colin Poche and Oliver Ortega.
