Las Vegas Raiders safety Lonnie Johnson Jr. suffered a broken right leg during a mock game in practice on Saturday, as reported by multiple sources. The 29-year-old was carted off the field after a violent collision with defensive end Maxx Crosby while trying to tackle running back Raheem Mostert.
Johnson, who joined the Raiders this offseason after a stint with the Carolina Panthers, will undergo an MRI to check for further damage. The severity of the injury, and whether surgery is necessary, will determine the length of his recovery, which could take anywhere from 10 weeks to six months.
Following the incident, Johnson shared a message on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “Imma soldier \[on] chin up chest out – God got me.”
Johnson, a six-year NFL veteran, signed a one-year contract with the Raiders after playing last season in Carolina, where he started once and appeared in 15 games, recording seven tackles. He had been competing for a starting role with the Raiders and had been working with the first team in nickel defense formations.
The former Kentucky standout, who has also played for the New Orleans Saints, Tennessee Titans, and Houston Texans, has accumulated 20 career starts and a total of 199 tackles, 15 passes defended, and four interceptions.
The Raiders, co-owned by Tom Brady, will play their first preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks on August 7, followed by additional preseason matchups against the San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals. The regular season kicks off with an away game against the New England Patriots.
Brady, who holds a 5% stake in the Raiders, made a surprise appearance at training camp this week, marking his first public appearance at practice since becoming a minority ownerof the team.
