Chicago White Sox shortstop Colson Montgomery made a dazzling defensive play in his MLB debut Friday night against the Colorado Rockies, sprinting back and making a diving, over-the-shoulder catch to snag a broken-bat blooper by Ryan Ritter in the second inning.
Earlier that frame, Montgomery reached base via catcher’s interference—making him the first player in the expansion era (since 1961) to do so in his first career plate appearance, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
The 6-foot-3, 230-pound infielder, selected 22nd overall in the 2021 draft, went 0-for-2 with a walk and a strikeout in Chicago’s 3-2 win. The Indiana native had roughly 15 to 20 family members and friends in attendance at Coors Field to witness his debut.
