Just In: Yankees Swap 2 top prospects for Pirates generational pitcher

The New York Yankees are known for their aggressive approach at the trade deadline, always looking to make a big move — and this year was no exception.

Yankees Inquired About Paul Skenes
According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, the Yankees reached out to the Pittsburgh Pirates about acquiring star pitcher Paul Skenes. The Pirates, however, made it clear he wasn’t available, viewing Skenes as a key part of their future.

Despite the Pirates’ current stance, history shows that smaller-market teams often move on from elite pitchers once their contracts become expensive through arbitration. For now, Pittsburgh is holding firm, but the Yankees are keeping an eye on the situation.

Yankees Made a Strong Offer
Heyman revealed that the Yankees were willing to include two of their top prospects — outfielder Spencer Jones and infielder George Lombard Jr. — in preliminary trade talks for Skenes.

“That was the one scenario where the Yankees were open to moving both Spencer Jones and George Lombard Jr.,” Heyman said. “But nothing came of it.”

This level of interest speaks to how highly the Yankees regard Skenes and his potential to reshape a franchise.

Prospect Breakdown: Spencer Jones
Jones, 24, started the year in Double-A before moving up to Triple-A after a strong start. Although his production dipped, he still hit 17 home runs and posted a 125 wRC+ in 59 Triple-A games — solid numbers, but slightly below expectations. Even so, his athleticism and power make him the Yankees’ top outfield prospect.

Prospect Breakdown: George Lombard Jr.
Lombard Jr., only 20, reached Double-A this year. While his offensive numbers (.216/.337/.361) suggest he’s still adjusting, his standout defense at shortstop gives him long-term value. The Yankees see him as a future everyday infielder, making him a difficult piece to trade.

Why the Yankees Made the Call
Trading both prospects for Skenes would’ve been a hefty price — but likely justifiable given Skenes’ elite fastball and ace potential. While talks didn’t progress, the Yankees showed they’re willing to part with valuable assets for a true difference-maker on the mound.

A New York Twist
Heyman also pointed out a humorous detail — the Yankees’ inquiry came shortly after reports surfaced that Skenes’ girlfriend, influencer Livvy Dunne, was apartment-hunting in New York City. Though amusing, the Yankees downplayed any connection between the two events.

What’s Next
In the end, the Pirates declined to engage, and the Yankees’ offer wasn’t enough. Still, this situation signals New York’s readiness to make bold moves for elite pitching talent. If Pittsburgh ever reconsiders Skenes’ availability, expect the Yankees to be among the first in line.
