The Boston Red Sox will kick off the 2025 MLB season with a revamped roster, particularly in their pitching staff.
This offseason, they bolstered their rotation by adding left-handers, along with veteran right-hander Walker Buehler. Additionally, 36-year-old fireballer Aroldis Chapman was brought in for bullpen depth, while righty reliever Adam Ottavino recently signed a minor-league deal.
Despite these acquisitions, the Red Sox remain active in the market, making yet another pitching move as spring training progresses.Red Sox Sign Matt Moore to Minor-League Deal
On Thursday, Boston announced the signing of veteran right-hander Matt Moore to a minor-league contract. According to MassLive’s Chris Cotillo, the 35-year-old lefty had been on the team’s radar for some time.
“The Red Sox pursued Moore in previous offseasons, too,” Cotillo noted. “Like Ottavino, he’ll have an end-of-camp opt-out if he isn’t on the 40-man roster by then.”
Moore is a seasoned reliever, having appeared in 369 games across eight franchises since his MLB debut in 2011. Should he make the cut, Boston would be his fifth team since 2023.
The veteran pitcher is looking for a fresh start after struggling with the Los Angeles Dodgers last season. Despite signing a $9 million deal, Moore posted a disappointing 5-3 record with a 5.03 ERA and a 1.345 WHIP, surrendering 2.0 home runs and 4.8 walks per nine innings. His season was cut short by a serious elbow injury in August, landing him on the 60-day injured list before the playoffs.
Just a year prior, in 2023, Moore was dominant, recording a 2.56 ERA with 10.3 strikeouts per nine innings in 50 appearances. The Red Sox are hoping he can rediscover that form, especially after their bullpen finished 2024 with the seventh-worst ERA (4.39) in the league.
