The Dallas Mavericks are entering a critical 2025 offseason, and GM Nico Harrison must make smart decisions to rebuild the team into a contender after a disappointing season. Following last year’s NBA Finals appearance, Harrison made a bold move at the trade deadline, dealing away Luka Doncic, Maxi Kleber, Markieff Morris, and Quentin Grimes. So far, the shake-up hasn’t paid off.
Injuries played a major role in the team’s struggles—Kyrie Irving tore his ACL and Anthony Davis strained his adductor in his debut—but flawed roster construction is also to blame. The Mavs lack shot creation, shooting, and backcourt depth, even though their frontcourt is strong. These issues must be addressed this offseason.
Though cap space is limited, the Mavericks have key decisions to make with several potential free agents, including Spencer Dinwiddie, Dante Exum, Dwight Powell (player option), and Kyrie Irving (player option). Among them, Exum presents the biggest risk.
Why Dallas Should Let Dante Exum Walk
Exum, despite his defensive prowess, offensive organization, and outside shooting, has a long history of injuries that makes re-signing him a major gamble. While he played well when healthy, injuries again limited his availability. Last season, he appeared in just 20 games and missed time both before and during the season due to wrist and hand injuries.
With Irving expected to miss significant time next season, the Mavericks can’t afford more uncertainty in their backcourt. Over two seasons in Dallas, Exum played only 75 games—less than half the possible total. Re-signing him would likely lead to more frustration.
The Mavericks knew about Exum’s injury history when they signed him two years ago. With his deal now expiring, it’s the right moment to move on. Dallas should pursue a more durable option to help stabilize the team, while Exum can seek a fresh opportunity elsewhere to continue his NBA resurgence.
